The 15th Day of the third month of the lunar calendar is marked as a Mahaparinirvina of Drubwang Lama Sonam Zangpo (aka as Meme Lama in Bhutan). Lama Sonam Zangpo (1888-1982) was a direct disciple of Drubwang Shakya Shri, who specialized in the Six Yogas of Naropa. Lama Sonam Zangpo travelled to Kham, Tibet to study with Shakya Shri in his teens. He received Dzogchen and Mahamudra teaching from many masters in Tibet. He also became a highly renowned teacher within Shakya Shri’s community, and even held the title of “heart son”. After the passing of his master in 1919, Lama Sonam Zangpo continued to live in Tibet teaching and guiding Shakya Shri’s students. Later Lama Sonam Zangpo came and taught extensively in Bhutan. In East Bhutan, Lama Sonam Zangpo built a small temple which is now known as Chokyi Gyatso Institute in Dewathang. Today the institute functions as a ‘shedrub’, where monks are able to both study and practice the Buddhadharma. Lama Sonam Zangpo, is a maternal grandfather of Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche.
